We are all kaitiaki (guardians)

The extinct huia bird once prolific in the 70 Mile BushIt is believed by Maori that Tanemahuta, god of the forests, separated Ranginui (the Sky Father) and Papatuanuku (the Earth Mother), who were joined so tightly together that no light could come between them. In doing so, the multitude of creatures that live in the forest were uncovered and felt the light and heat for the first time.

People, too, are said to belong to the land and are considered kaitiaki. We have the responsibility of caring for, and conserving, all other living things, and ensuring the preservation of the natural world.
